Activated Carbon

Activated Carbon

Highly porous, purified carbon produced from coconut shell charcoal, used in water and air purification, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and chemical industries for superior adsorption capabilities.

Description

Activated carbon is obtained from coconut shell charcoal through physical or chemical activation processes. Coconut shell-based activated carbon is known for its micro-porous structure, high surface area, and excellent adsorption properties, especially for low molecular weight organic compounds.

The production involves two main steps:

  1. Carbonization: Dried coconut shells are carbonized (pyrolyzed) in a controlled environment at high temperatures (600–900°C) to produce shell charcoal.

  2. Activation: The charcoal is activated with steam at temperatures of 900–1100°C in a rotary kiln, creating a vast porous structure ideal for adsorption.

Coconut shell activated carbon is widely used for:

  • Water purification

  • Air filtration

  • Gold recovery

  • Solvent recovery

  • Food and pharmaceutical purification

  • Gas masks and respirators

Its superior hardness and low dust generation make it ideal for repeated use in filtering systems.
